Sound Bites- Bayside City Council’s first online music event
Bayside City Council 28 May 2020

In March of 2020, Bayside Youth Services and the Boombox Events FReeZA committee were busy planning a community Birthday party to celebrate Peterson Youth Centre’s 20th-anniversary, featuring live performances from local young artists for the community to enjoy. Due to COVID-19, the event was cancelled in the interest of health and safety.

Determined to continue with their plans, the enthusiastic committee members developed Sound Bites, an online platform designed for young artists to submit video footage of themselves performing, transforming their homes into their stage. Council would, in turn, live stream each videoed performance to a captivated audience of music-loving Baysiders, all rocking simultaneously from their own homes in support of the young musicians.

Thirteen artists aged 10-25 years old, with a connection to Bayside, smashed out one gig from many homes. The performers included singer-songwriters showcasing their own material, cover artists performing music versions of Billy Eilish, Radiohead, Frozen 2 tracks and more. As of Thursday 28 May 2020, Sound Bites has been viewed by over 5,400 people on social media.

This event would not have been possible without the support of the Bayside community, from the performers to the audience members who tuned in for the event. Do you want to help create exciting music, dance, and cultural events for the community? Express your interest here.
