For local mum Lilly Chan the launch of a click and collect library service in CBCity is the start of a new norm she looks forward to.

As the COVID-19 pandemic forced all library and knowledge centres to close, Ms Chan joined hundreds of others who have taken advantage of CBCity’s new “library takeaway” service.

Ms Chan said while it’s not quite the same as being able to physically browse collections for new items, it is the next best thing.

“You got to take one step at a time. My husband, my son and I all use it. The service is very easy to use ... and it is a definite step in the right direction.”

More than 1000 reservations were made a week after the service launched, which allows people to reserve resources ranging from books to magazines and DVDs over the phone or online, before arranging a time for pickup. Returned items are then quarantined for at least 24 hours before being handled again, in line with NSW Health guidelines.

Mayor Khal Asfour said the community’s uptake reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to safely provide relevant services to the community during a global health crisis and mass closures.

“We’ve made it more accessible and convenient but most importantly safe for everyone, young and old, to continue enjoying the freedoms of reading a good book at a time of unprecidented restrictions,” he said.

“We’ve created something that is literally as easy as picking up takeaway food. It’s our libraries’ takeaway service, and the huge demand we’ve seen sends a clear message people are absolutely loving it, so we’ll be continuing this once the pandemic is over.”

Mayor Asfour said the service is among the latest measures Council has taken to usher in the start of a new era where our services are “reopening - but are open different”.

From Monday 1 June, Campsie and Bankstown libraries will offer access to public computers. Campsie meeting rooms will also be available, limited to one person per four square metres.

“These measures will be in place as we slowly transition to a new norm. While this has been a very difficult time for everyone, I want to say a big Thank U to you, our community. You’re all helping us get through this together,” Mayor Asfour said.
