Council is continuing its series of free online waste education workshops, which are proving popular during time in isolation.

Read below for what’s on during the month of June.

June workshops Worm farming and Bokashi online workshop

Bokashi might sound like an exotic Japanese meal, but it is a quick and easy solution to breaking down your household food waste.

During this workshop you will learn how to set up, maintain and use a worm farm or Bokashi bin from the comfort of your own home.

Did you know worms eat half their body weight in food every day?

Worm farming is suited to almost any household. Even if you only have a balcony or small courtyard, a worm farm can be used to reduce your food scraps going to landfill.

“Minimising your waste at home by starting a worm farm can have many benefits such as reducing pollution, saving money and conserving resources,” said Deputy Mayor, Councillor Marijke Graham.

The Bokashi bin is a Japanese system that pickles your waste (bokashi means fermentation) and is perfectly suited to small spaces.

“Bokashi composting is a safe, convenient, and quick way to compost food waste in your kitchen, garage or apartment. Best of all, Bokashi buckets can be stored inside with no smell, and is a simple way to cut your food waste by having one under your kitchen sink,” Cr Graham said.

The Worm farming and Bokashi at home online workshop will be held on Thursday 4 June, 7pm to 8pm.

DIY tote bag online workshop

Australians are the world’s second-largest consumers of textiles, buying on average 27 kilograms of new clothing and other textiles each year.

Fast fashion produced from global supply chains is driving purchasing of affordable new clothing that is often discarded after a few wears.

Learn about the textile industry and how to make a better choice when shopping for your favourite outfits at our DIY tote bag workshop.

“As part of the session you’ll learn how to upcycle and create a shopping bag. All you need is an old t-shirt, a marker and scissors,” Cr Graham said.

“The workshop is a great opportunity for those people wanting to learn how to reduce clothing waste by upcycling.”

The DIY tote bag online workshop will be held on Thursday 18 June, 7pm to 8pm.
