A small area in the north of Oval 4 in Elsternwick Park South has been closed ahead of soil remediation works on Thursday 11 June 2020.
Following a series of soil tests, most recently on 15 May, a preliminary assessment report has indicated an elevated level of Benzo(a)pyrene contamination below the grassed surface in a small area in the north of Oval 4.
The area identified as contaminated, together with soils in the near vicinity, will be excavated on Thursday 11 June. The works will be undertaken by specialist contractors in accordance with EPA guidelines and the area will remain fenced off to the public until the works are completed and the grass cover has been reinstated.
Parking in the Bent Avenue East car park will also be restricted during works. Five car spaces will be closed for contractor vehicles during works, with signage in place to inform motorists not to occupy these spaces on 11 June.
The soil tests were conducted to inform Council’s plans to upgrade Oval 4 and formalise sports facilities at the oval. The report stated that, with the exception of the soils identified as requiring remediation, the soils “are considered to be suitable for the proposed future use of the park as a sports oval and pavilion.”
Council will continue to keep the community updated on projects throughout Elsternwick Park. Sign up to receive updates.
