Cleaning blitz puts locals back in work and stops the spread of COVID-19

 A band of friendly cleaners have walked 6400 kilometres while sanitising Frankston City, on a mission to protect the community from the spread of COVID-19.

This is the equivalent of walking from Frankston to Perth and back but the five dedicated teams of five are taking this new exercise routine in their stride.

Over a four week period, 50 people who have lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic, joined the major cleaning blitz of Frankston City as part of the State Government’s Working for Victoria program, in partnership with Council.

The teams have been welcomed by the local community, with many residents taking to social media to complement them on a job well done.

Frankston City Mayor, Sandra Mayer, echoed this sentiment, saying that the program had the dual benefit of providing valuable employment and protecting the health of locals.

“Through this program, people have been able to go back to work, which does wonders for their mental and financial health and the local economy,” Cr Mayer said.

“Additionally, it means highly frequented public spaces, such as the city centre, the waterfront, shopping strips, parks and playground equipment are being cleansed and disinfected about four times a day.

“This program complements Council’s existing cleaning regime and ensures we are doing our best to prevent the spread of this virus in our community,” the Mayor added.

Funded by the Victorian Government, Citywide Cleansing and Sanitisation Services is recruiting, training and supervising program participants.
