Wollondilly Council has welcomed a $224,000 boost for new local infrastructure under Round 4 of the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund, which supports drought-affected communities.
Thanks to the funding, the new Picton GPO Smart Hub will become a reality, including the repair and upgrade of the old Picton Post Office building and the creation of an inclusive hub for business owners, start-ups and employees to cowork, network, and take part in education and events.
Mayor Matthew Deeth thanked Federal Member for Hume, The Hon. Angus Taylor MP for this much needed positive economic boost, providing jobs for Picton and the broader Wollondilly community.
“I am delighted to receive this $224,364 grant which, together with matching investment from Council, will provide jobs now and in the future.”
“It comes at a critical time, as our local economy recovers from not only an ongoing drought, but bushfires, floods and the Covid-19 pandemic.”
“This project will drive economic growth and strengthen the local business community,” he said.
The Picton GPO Smart Hub will provide the opportunity for centrally located education, mentoring and co-working, giving employers greater capability and confidence to make new hires and create jobs.
The Picton GPO was built in 1882 as the Post Office and today stands as one of the most iconic buildings in the Wollondilly Shire. The building was damaged during flooding in 2016 and has had to undergo some minor structural refurbishment, but needs further work to make it fully operational for the community.
The infrastructure upgrade project will provide local employment and contracting opportunities, while the final use of the building will provide economic and social benefits to the region for years to come.
