Wyndham City Council will be starting its third annual Wyndham Waste Watchers Challenge.
After last year’s successful event, where Council helped 17 Tarneit families learn more about recycling, an average of 17.5 per cent reduction in waste being sent to landfill was achieved.
This year, due to Covid-19 restrictions, we will be opening the five-week challenge up to the entire Wyndham community in an online educational series.
Wyndham City’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder Cr Heather Marcus said the program would teach residents more about recycling, composting, and how to reduce their impact on the planet.
“The main aim of the program is to show residents what can and cannot go into the recycling bin, in an attempt to reduce valuable waste from ending up in our landfill sites,” Cr Marcus said.
“Waste Watchers is aimed at those who are not confident about their recycling and composting practices, largely because there are many mistakes that residents are making when it comes to recycling, so everyone is sure to pick up a few tips they had not learnt before.”
“For example, did you know that its best to keep the caps of bottles on when recycling because the small parts can get lost in the recycling process and never get recycled?”
“The five-week online course will teach residents about waste and recycling in Wyndham, through a mixture of online resources, information sessions and videos.”
“By the end of the five weeks participants will understand what can and cannot be placed in kerbside bins; know what materials are recyclable/compostable and where to take them; reduce waste to landfill; have reduced their recycling/compost contamination; and understand how to reduce and reuse household waste.”
Everyone is welcome so sign up, save the dates with your family or housemates and tune in for all your waste education needs.
