Safety works underway for Coolamon Scenic Drive

Major work on Coolamon Scenic Drive has started with the end game being improved safety for more than 2,000 drivers who use the road every day.

A $2.4 million grant from the NSW Government’s Safer Roads program will see improvements on the 16.5 kilometre road from Azalea Street at Mullumbimby to the Hinterland Way.

Phil Holloway, Byron Shire Council’s Director Infrastructure Services, said the road has a history of crashes,  is narrow and windy in some areas, has limited signage and steep drop-offs.

“The funding from the Safer Roads Program is very welcome as this road is not only used by many locals, but is getting increasingly busier with tourists using it as they explore the region,” Mr Holloway said.

The improvements include the widening of the road and an anti-skid surface in some sections as well as the installation of safety barriers, signage and guideposts.

“The end result will be an easier and safer drive for motorists and this is a great outcome for everyone who uses that road,” Mr Holloway said.

The work is expected to take around three months and should be finished in September this year.

Drivers should expect short delays.
