Wollondilly Council will consider naming a local laneway to commemorate the late John Corbett and acknowledge his significant contribution to Picton and the Wollondilly community at Tuesday night’s Council meeting.

In August last year Wollondilly Council paid tribute to the local businessman, who tragically lost his life in a plane crash at Braidwood.

Mr Corbett was a well-known property owner and member of the Picton community, having established and managed the Picton Mall and a number of other development sites in the area.

A report to Council recommends renaming Manolis Lane in Picton to ‘Corbett Way / Lane.’ The name Manolis Lane will instead be used to identify a laneway in the Picton Cemetery.

Mayor Matthew Deeth noted, “The late John Corbett and his family developed and previously owned Picton Mall, which has a road entrance currently named Manolis Lane.”

“The Picton Mall location is one of Mr Corbett’s most recognisable contributions to the community and this location is a fitting place to commemorate him with a road naming in his honour.”

Council has consulted with the Picton & District Historical and Family History Society and the Macarthur Greeks in relation to relocating Manolis Lane to Picton Cemetery, which is viewed as a more geographically and historically relevant location.

It has been confirmed that the geographical history of Antonis Manolis is around upper Picton near Picton Cemetery. Consultation with the various parties has confirmed support for the proposal to rename the unnamed lane in the Picton Cemetery as Manolis Lane.

If Council adopts the proposal, they would proceed with an application to commence the road naming process, beginning with a period of 21-28 days for community feedback on the proposal.

If no objections are received, the name will be put to the Geographical Names Board for approval and subsequent gazettal. Once published in the Gazette, Council will be able to erect signage at the location.
