No need for disposables – contactless coffee
Bayside City Council 16 Jun 2020

As restaurants and cafes begin to re-open with the gradual easing of COVID-19 restrictions, now's the time to consider a return to environmentally-friendly coffee habits.

Check out this contactless coffee guide for café owners from The Boomerang Alliance, which demonstrates how cafés can provide coffee in reusable cups without contact with customers.

Customers place their clean reusable cup onto the counter or on a tray without the lid. Coffee is made in an in-house vessel, and poured into the customer’s cup without touching it. The customer then places the lid on their reusable cup.

Victorian State Government guidelines for hospitality businesses state “there is currently no evidence to suggest any benefit in switching to disposable, single-use food and beverage containers, cutlery and crockery”.

The most effective measures for protecting our community from the impact of COVID-19 remain practising good hand and respiratory hygiene, and regular cleaning and sanitation of surfaces.

Many cafés and restaurants are now adopting contactless takeaway systems. Share the contactless coffee guide or have a chat with your regular café to find out if they are accepting reusable coffee cups.
