Rails to Sails information station upgrade brings Augusta community together

The Rails to Sails Information Station, located in Flinders Bay, Augusta has received a well-earned refresh thanks to eager community members, keen to be involved in the project. The works include a newly painted mural, updated photo display and landscaping which pays homage to the local history of the area.

Augusta Historical Society, Keeper of Memorials Jan White was the driving force behind the project, with local artist Paula Higginson working closely by her side to create a mural that illustrates the history of Flinders Bay.

Ms White explained that she was overwhelmed with the support of the local community and their eagerness in being involved in this project.

“Throughout the project people regularly stopped for a chat to find out how they could lend a hand,” she said.

“The additional volunteers helped with painting, gardening and other tasks, which brought a real sense of community involvement to the project.”

Shire President, Ian Earl congratulates the Augusta Historical Society and volunteers on the effort put into bringing this mural to life.

“It is fantastic to see the community come together to preserve such important pieces of our region’s history enabling residents and visitors to enjoy it in such a visually pleasing display.”

The Rails to Sails is an outdoor museum display at Flinders Bay, which works in partnership with the interpretation signage that the Shire is developing for the Cape Leeuwin Trail. The mural features the history of the timber mill and transport rail to sail, with remnants of the former Flinders Bay Jetty and other shipping relics on display.
