With an easing of COVID-19 restrictions in the Snowy Monaro, families are now able to enjoy the region’s playgrounds, skate parks and outdoor exercise equipment.
This easing is recognition that so far, social distancing measures have been working to reduce the spread of COVID-19 throughout our region and NSW.
We currently have no active COVID-19 cases in the Snowy Monaro. Well done to all those who have followed health guidelines. Now is not the time for complacency. We must continue to practice good personal hygiene and following restrictions that are still in place.
A list of activities now allowed in the Snowy Monaro can be found on Council’s website or by contacting Council on 1300 345 345.
Last week, I joined General Manager Peter Bascomb for the latest meeting of the Canberra Region Joint Organisation. This group comprises mayors, general managers and representatives from councils throughout the south-east.
Former NSW RFS Commissioner and now head of Resilience NSW, Shane Fitzsimmons, delivered a presentation on resilience following the bushfires.
Minister Melinda Pavey discussed water and wastewater infrastructure in regional areas and Minister for Mental Health Bronnie Taylor discussed mental health problems arising from the bushfires and COVID-19.
A webinar has been held to update Snowy Monaro landholders on funding available to repair bushfire damaged fences. Further details can be obtained through contacting Council’s Bushfire Recovery Team.
Council has submitted its response to the NSW Independent Bushfire Inquiry. The response calls for greater coordination of services between all levels of government and improved telecommunications for our regional and remote areas. We eagerly await the findings and actions so we are better prepared for future bushfires.
Thank you to Member for Monaro John Barilaro and Member of the Legislative Council Bronnie Taylor for their funding announcements on Friday that will support Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club to the tune of $193,000, the Gaden Trout Hatchery and youth booth program in Bombala.
Next week, I encourage all families to join Councillor James Ewart for a live reading of the children’s book - Whitney and Britney the Chicken Divas. The reading is part of National Simultaneous Storytime celebrations. You can watch the reading on Council’s Facebook page at 11am on Wednesday 27 May.
