Recreation opportunities will be expanded for tens of thousands of CQ residents thanks to a plan to be implemented by the Isaac Regional Council.

Councillors unanimously approved a 10-year Recreation and Open Space Strategy at their monthly meeting on Wednesday.

“This is a very exciting development,” Mayor Anne Baker said. “There has been extensive community consultation about this plan and we are excited to finally be implementing it.

“This strategy reflects community views gathered in face-to-face meetings, comments made direct to Council members and written comments.

“It will guide us in providing the sporting and outdoor recreation facilities that families and other residents tell us they want.

“It represents the needs and expectations of our growing community, while setting a framework for the creation of an active, safe, healthy and vibrant region that enhances Isaac’s reputation as a region that energises the world.

“Isaac Regional Council will be working with all levels of government, along with State and local sporting and community organisations, to ensure objectives can be achieved.”

Mayor Baker said the wide-ranging strategy addresses five key strategies:

increasing the activation of public spaces; improving accessibility and connection; improving existing assets to maximise utilisation; improving community health; and collaborating wherever possible.

“Projected developments and activities under the strategy include a sportsground condition audit, a review of female amenities, a vegetation management policy, a play-spaces policy and dog parks, just as some examples.

“It proposes a number of projects for funding consideration, the development of options for grants, and the potential to capitalise on those and other funding source to assist with delivery of recommended initiatives.”

The Recreation and Open Space Strategy will be available on the Isaac Regional Council website in coming days.
