Zara Zannettino Textiles"As a former research scientist in Virology and Transplantation Immunology, my awe of the natural world continues to inspire my artistic work which predominantly utilises improvisational fabric collage and detailed stitching on stretched canvases. Other techniques used include fabric dyeing, painting, stencilling, dye-discharge and beading. This career change is now backed by 20 years of experience in creating traditional patchwork quilts and fabric/textile wall art that includes a body of work dispersed across private commissions, consignments, competitions and exhibitions. Other valued associations include belonging to the international art group SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Association) and our local Quilters Guild of South Australia (QGSA), where I was once involved in helping value quilts. I have also enjoyed being a textile teacher in the past.
My current style and process aims to highlight details or subject matter that I feel warrant closer appreciation or are 'Worthy of Wonder'. The final outcome therefore aims to make the viewer think 'W.O.W!' due to either the design, the artist statement behind the inspiration or even the multi-layered and textured construction process itself. Often this work is derived from daily walks, my photography or from the natural development of a series of studio experimentation projects. As such my works are unique, one-off designs that aren’t repeated, as reflected in my trading name 'Funky-One-Off Designs'. I hope you enjoy viewing my progress to date."
