Would you like to have your say on Council’s first Reconciliation Action Plan?
The draft Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) will be available for comment until 31 July.
The inaugural RAP has been released following 18 months of development including close consultation with the traditional owners of the country on which Macedon Ranges is located, the Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Peoples.
Mayor, Cr Janet Pearce said it was important the entire community had an opportunity to provide input to the RAP.
“This RAP is a first for Council and a first for our community,” Cr Pearce said.
“We have developed this RAP to build a deeper understanding of reconciliation within the community and show our commitment to supporting improved outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the shire.
“Our vision for reconciliation is one of equality and unity between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Peoples and all Macedon Ranges communities, which recognises past injustices, our shared history and shared future, and strengthens Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ right to self-determination.”
The RAP reflects the reconciliation priorities of its traditional owners and local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and Council is now inviting public feedback on the draft document.
NAIDOC week postponedThe National NAIDOC Committee (NNC) has postponed this year’s National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week celebrations from July to November in a bid to protect elders and those in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities with chronic health issues from COVID-19 impacts.
NAIDOC Week celebrations are normally held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities but by all Australians.
Council will continue to organise local community NAIDOC Week celebrations for November so that the community can participate in a range of activities that support the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
More information on November NAIDOC Week celebrations will be provided closer to the time.
