Lachlan Shire Council is pleased to advise that an official approval from NSW Health has
been granted for the fluoridation of the Lake Cargelligo Town Water Supply, to commence
on Monday 20 July 2020.
The announcement follows the long-term upgrade process of the Lake Cargelligo Water
Treatment Plant since funding was first announced in 2015. This upgrade work includes
the installation of Lake Cargelligo Fluoridation Unit (and its associated civil/building
works), automation/control system upgrade and the final inspection by Department of
Planning, Industry and Environment to ensure that the fluoridation unit is working
satisfactorily in accordance with the Fluoridation of Public Water Supplies Act 1957.
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in rocks and soil, vegetables and grains,
as well as in fresh and salt water. The fluoride found in the environment, however is not
sufficient on its own to protect our teeth, which is why small supplemental amounts are
added to the water supply, as well as into toothpaste and other dental products.
Fluoride is crucial in combatting tooth decay, giving teeth extra strength when they are
developing to enable them to better resist the bacterial acid which causes tooth decay.
Fluoride also combats the plaque which leads to tooth decay.
NSW Health reports show tooth decay is almost twice as prevalent in towns with nonfluoridated
water. Fluoride saves costs on dental treatment and improves local oral health.
The safety of water fluoridation has been confirmed by the World Health Organisation,
and the National Health and Medical Research Council.
Lachlan Shire Council takes the Health and Safety of all its residents very seriously and
strict criteria has been followed before the commencement of fluoridation of the Lake
Cargelligo water supply. Great importance has been placed on ensuring the fluoridation
unit is operating and commissioned correctly to meet Australian Drinking Water
Guidelines.
A lengthy commissioning process has been undertaken by NSW Health and Department
of Planning, Industry and Environment to ensure the plant is operating correctly. As a
result, NSW Health has granted approval for the fluoridation of the Lake Cargelligo Town
Water Supply which will commence from Monday 20 July 2020.
