School crossings first appeared in Victoria just after WW2, initially just marked with 'children crossing' flags. In 1974, school crossing supervisors were introduced to increase the safety of areas where children frequently crossed the road at peak school times. These days, you cannot walk to school without saying "good morning" to a supervisor. They are an invaluable part of the Bayside community.
A decade ago (2010), School Crossings Victoria established the School Crossing Supervisor of the Year Award, a biannual recognition of the enriching contribution school crossing supervisors bring communities across the state.
