The City of Fremantle has been working with the Fremantle Netball Association in an effort to ease parking congestion around Frank Gibson Park for the coming netball season.
The Netball Association’s winter season is scheduled to begin on Saturday 18 July, but due to the High Street Upgrade project currently being undertaken by Main Roads WA netball players and spectators will no longer be able to park on the road verge alongside the Fremantle Public Golf Course.
To help compensate for the loss of the informal parking on High Street the City of Fremantle has agreed to ease some restrictions on verge parking in the surrounding streets.
The City is also creating a drop-off zone on Chudleigh Street where parents can safely drop off their children at the netball courts before moving on to find parking elsewhere.
Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said netballers needed to be aware of the High Street changes and plan accordingly.
“In the past we’ve had hundreds of people parking on the verge along the golf course and crossing over High Street to get to the netball courts, but they won’t be able to do that anymore,” Mayor Pettitt said.
“In response, the Netball Association is encouraging its members to think ahead and consider using alternatives to parking such as car-pooling and public transport.
“The new drop-off zone on Chudleigh Street should also reduce the amount of ‘panic parking’ we see from parents needing to get their children to their game on time.
“While the City has agreed to open up some street verges for netball parking, we will also be stepping up parking enforcement. The Netball Association has warned its members that if they park illegally they will be issued with an infringement.”
The High Street Upgrade project includes the provision of new parking spaces on the northern side of High Street, and the formalisation of the existing informal parking on Wilkinson Street. These parking bays will be available once the project is complete.
