Competition to put the spotlight on talented local Indigenous artists

Posted on July 9, 2020

All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists who live in the Central Highlands region are urged to submit artwork for the Central Highlands Regional Council (CHRC) Indigenous Polo Shirt Design Competition.

The winning artwork will be used to produce an Indigenous polo shirt which will be available for purchase by council staff and the general public.

The competition is open to Indigenous artists of all ages and the winning artist will receive $1,000 prize money and 2020 Indigenous polo shirt featuring their design.

Mayor Kerry Hayes said the competition is a wonderful opportunity for the winning entrant to achieve wide recognition across the Central Highlands as well as raise the profile of the many talented Indigenous artists across the region.

‘We have some fantastic local artists across the Central Highlands and this competition is a terrific opportunity to showcase that talent and, as a community, demonstrate our pride in our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture,’ he said.

‘We hope that in coming months the winning entry will be a common sight around the Central Highlands with many council staff and residents purchasing and wearing the polo shirts.’

Department of Education Indigenous Pathways and Partnership coordinator and local Indigenous artist, Charmaine McKeon-Parlett said the competition is an exciting way for Indigenous people to share their culture and urged all local Indigenous artists to apply.

‘Cultural connection is a unique feeling of oneness that links you to your identity. Art enables you to share the story of your people/dreaming,’ she said.

All submitted entries will be displayed at the Emerald Art Gallery and copies of the artwork will be available for viewing at all Central Highlands libraries. The winning entry will be decided by a People’s Choice voting system with community members able to vote for their favourite entry by visiting the gallery or any of the library branches.

Artwork will be on display between Monday 14 September and Thursday 1 October with voting closing on Wednesday 23 September.

Artwork submitted must be the artist’s own work and reflect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

Entries will be received between Monday 7 September and Thursday 10 September 2020 and entries close 5.00 pm, Thursday 10 September.
