Deterrent activities for flying foxes to continue

Relocation activities of flying foxes, which began at the Cairns City Library last Saturday morning, have successfully discouraged the majority of the animals from returning to the site or settling in other areas within the CBD.

For each round of relocation activity, Council has an operational window of 30 days. After a review of relocation progress to date, in accordance with the licence approved by the Federal Government, Council now intends to engage in deterrent operations for up to 30 consecutive days.

The deterrent operations will start 4am every morning using non-lethal deterrence measures until 2 August 2020.

During the relocation, residents may see flying foxes overhead – this is expected.

Residents are reminded not to harass bats with noise or threatening behaviour as they fly-over as this could be harmful to both them or the bats, and it is illegal.

If residents feel bats are causing problems in their area call Council on 1300 692 247.

If residents see a fallen or injured fly foxes, they should not touch them and call Wildlife Carers FNQ on 4281 6869.
