NSW Minister for Energy and Environment Matthew Kean will be guest speaker during a Council webinar on Waste Management, alongside Council’s Director – Businesses, Scot MacDonald, and Manager - Utilities Shane Anderson.
Tonight's webinar (9 July) concludes a series of successful community engagement initiatives by Council for the public exhibition of the draft 2020/21 Operational Plan and Budget, including water and waste services and charges.
The concluding webinar will focus on waste management, including the new Waterfall Way Regional Landfill and the benefits and associated cost to ratepayers.
The new landfill, scheduled to open in September, will operate alongside Council’s existing waste management facilities in Armidale and Guyra and is designed to accept up to 15,000 tonnes of general solid waste per annum.
Mr MacDonald said the activation of the new landfill is critical for safe, responsible handling of waste, with existing landfill cells in Armidale at capacity and the Guyra landfill cells in need of extensive rehabilitation to meet current environmental standards.
“Our community expects a high standard of environmental management and Council has delivered a landfill that minimises the impact on the environment and meets current standards rigorously managed by the NSW Government,” he said.
“The regional landfill will be servicing the entire Local Government Area and it’s important that all our waste service charges are harmonised and are fair and equitable for ratepayers.”
Tomorrow’s webinar will be held from 6pm – 7.30pm, with Minister Kean expected to speak and answer questions.
