Council voted against the officer’s recommendation to support the proposed development at 1 Airlie Street, which would see a 17-storey apartment building transform the derelict site.
Mayor Jock Barker said the 900 page agenda item showed extensive research into the development’s due regard to process. Although there were appealing aspects to the development, community concerns overruled.
“We need to listen to the concerns of our community, namely about the imposing height to neighbouring residents as well as the impact of traffic on an already busy stretch of highway,” Mayor Barker said.
More than a dozen members of the public made statements explaining why they opposed or supported the proposal, with the majority of statements against the development.
The development proposal will now be assessed by the Joint Development Assessment Panel (JDAP) for their decision on Tuesday.
“Ultimately, the decision now rests with JDAP and we hope the JDAP committee meeting next week takes into consideration Council’s decision not to support this development,” Mayor Barker said.
A petition with more than 170 signatures against the development will be submitted to the hearing.
