Cat owners living in the Gannawarra are encouraged to be responsible pet owners this winter.
Council has received an increasing number of enquiries regarding missing cats over the past few months.
“Having a pet, such as a dog or cat, provides companionship and can help with physical and mental health. However, it is important that if you do own a pet to act responsibly. This includes being mindful of the welfare of your pet and the impact your pet may have on neighbours and other residents,” Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Development, Geoff Rollinson said.
“Cats who are registered, de-sexed and provided with care, adequate food and a secure comfortable place to sleep do not usually cause problems to other residents or their pets.
“Keeping your cat contained and content at home also means the risks associated with roaming, such as being hurt by, or endangering other animals are reduced.”
Residents can also assist in ensuring responsible pet practices are occurring by not feeding cats that are not yours and if you have a problem with a neighbour’s cat, talk to them about the issue.
Council can also assist property owners with cat trapping to remove unwanted or unowned animals.
“It is compulsory under the Domestic Animals Act 1994 for a person who traps a cat to give it to an authorised officer of Council,” Mr Rollinson said.
“Council has been involved with rehousing more than 140 cats in 2019/2020. These cats and kittens were de-sexed, microchipped and vaccinated prior to adoption.
“If you have a cat or dog you can no longer care for, please contact Council regarding surrendering your animal.”
