Council is urging motorists to slow down outside schools as there are still some children attending the City’s schools.
As part of the State Government’s recent Covid-19 restrictions, students from prep to Year 10 will be returning to online learning at home but students in Year 11 and 12, specialist schools, and children of frontline workers will be attending their usual schools.
Safer Communities portfolio holder Cr Heather Marcus said while the roads were quieter in the mornings and evenings, speed limit restrictions still came into effect from 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm on weekdays around schools.
“Wyndham City is managing 35 out of 130 school crossings this term.”
“Council is working closely with Victoria Police to ensure drivers slow down outside school zones (at the allocated school crossing times) and follow the direction of school crossing supervisors,” Cr Marcus said.
“The safety of our children and school crossing supervisors is paramount and anyone driving through the school crossing stop signs will place our children at risk of being injured.”
“Our school crossing supervisors are still working and we ask you to adhere to social
distancing measures by ensuring you keep 1.5 metres from one another and the supervisor for the health of all residents.”
“Parents are encouraged to park at nearby reserves and to walk the short distance to schools to minimise traffic congestion around the school gate, support social distancing, and boost health and wellbeing.”
“It is important to ensure children cross at the supervised school crossing, stay on the footpath and are aware of their surroundings.”
“To reduce school run stress, perhaps consider riding, walking, or scooting to school.”
