TRC seeking nominees for Regional Active and Public Transport Advisory Committee

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is calling on residents with a passion for contributing to a more active and connected region to nominate for Council’s Regional Active and Public Transport Advisory Committee (RAPTAC).

TRC Infrastructure Services Committee portfolio leader Cr Melissa Taylor said Council was seeking nominations to fill eight voluntary community positions on the committee. Nominations close on Friday, August 7.

“Council is keen to draw on the ideas and expertise of residents who will join four Councillors to examine how we can encourage more residents to incorporate walking and/or cycling into their daily routines or for leisure pursuits to improve their health and well-being,” Cr Taylor said.

“The committee also contributes ideas around public transport, which informs Council’s discussions with relevant public transport operators and interested user groups.”

Cr Taylor said RAPTAC, which was established in 2013, had offered valuable input which contributed to Council initiatives such as direct involvement in TransLink’s new bus services (2017), the signing of the International Walking Charter (2018) and the Transport and Active Living Forum (2019).

Cr Taylor said RAPTAC’s main functions included:

• Representing the interests of people with active and public transport issues and initiatives to Council and the broader community, • Providing input to Council on development issues and Council projects, • Providing consumer or industry/expertise input into Council's continuous improvement processes concerning active and public transport matters, • Assisting Council in the identification of emerging issues and initiatives, as well as trends relative to the needs of people using active or public transport modes in the region, • Assisting and/or advising with specific projects (identified by Council and/or the Advisory Committee), and • Assisting Council in disseminating appropriate material to aid community dialogue around active and public transport matters.

Cr Taylor said expressions of interest for positions on the advisory committee could be emailed to [email protected] or posted to Toowoomba Regional Council, PO Box 3021, Toowoomba, Qld, 4350. Please outline your previous experience or field of interest.

The committee’s first meeting will decide the annual schedule, which typically includes four meetings. Its term will coincide with the current Council, ending in 2024.

Active and public transport includes travel by foot, bicycle or other wheeled recreation devices, wheelchair, bus, taxi and other ride share schemes, for either transport or recreation.
