Gannawarra Shire Council’s commitment to improve female friendly facilities at recreation venues throughout the municipality will continue thanks to the support of the State Government.

Member for Northern Victoria, Mark Gepp announced earlier this month the redevelopment of the Murrabit Netball Club’s change rooms will proceed after the $328,000 project received $219,200 from the State Government’s Female Friendly Facilities program.

“Council is pleased to have worked with the Murrabit Netball Club to advocate for this project, which will benefit current and future netballers,” Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.

The redeveloped facilities will incorporate a new netball change room, umpires rooms, an accessible bathroom, first aid room and the renovation of the current netball change rooms.

“This project has been something we have been working towards over the last 12 months or so and to get a positive result at the end is very satisfying,” Murrabit Football Club president, Cameron Coulter said.

“This facility will accommodate our umpires, which we have struggled to do in recent years with the increase in on-field and off-field umpires, with the facility having the ability to be split in male and female sections if needed.

“We would also like to thank Gannawarra Shire Council for their contribution towards this major project and the work done in applying to Sport and Recreation Victoria.”

It is anticipated the works will be completed within the 2020/2021 financial year.

“This project builds on the upgrade of female friendly facilities at the Macorna Recreation Reserve and Riverside Park, Kerang, which will benefit netballers and footballers at both venues when competitions resume in 2021,” Mr O’Reilly said.

“These works also display Council’s commitment to increase the number of females within the Gannawarra participating in sport, as outlined in the Gannawarra Shire Council Plan 2017-2021 and our Sport and Recreation Strategy 2019-2029.

“Council thanks the State Government for its continued support and looks forward to seeing the upgrade of the Murrabit Netball Club change rooms come to fruition.”
