There is something about being in nature that is therapeutic and that was exactly the aim of the new Stirgess Garden at Curl Curl.

Recently opened, Council worked closely with the Curl Curl Lagoon Friends to transform a 400m bare patch of grass in the reserve to an informal, inviting, and inclusive space.

The garden has three entry points from the north east, south east and west which draw people from the Adam Street end of the shared path, Stirgess Ave Playground, and Weldon Oval respectively.

It has been reported that where people used to use the reserve as a thoroughfare walking around the edge, the garden now acts as a nexus via which people are drawn to, stopping, meeting and interacting with each other.

Pam Rawling Secretary of Curl Curl Lagoon Friends agrees.

“We love the new garden and we’ve noticed how it is used by lots of people especially families to sit and relax. Kids in particular play amongst the big rock seats and use their imagination in play.

“The garden has been a dream of Curl Curl Lagoon Friends for over 10 years to provide a space of contemplation separate to the sports fields. People ask us all about the garden when we are there and say how much they enjoy it too,” she said.

The garden is filled with seven types of Australian natives to withstand the salty air from the nearby ocean and is pleasant to look at. From Dianella ‘Little Jess’ which covers the ground to Grevillea and Banksia Serrata to Eucalyptus fill the new space.

In the coming weeks, two bench seats and a tap and bubbler will also be installed for the comfort of all.

Curl Curl Lagoon Friends is a community-based environmental organisation established in 1980 by nearby residents. The group aim to rehabilitate the health of the lagoon and its surrounds, protect the environmental and aesthetic values into the future and keep the community informed about this precious local asset.

You are welcome to join in their 40th birthday celebrations on-site on Sunday 25 October from 11am.
