New street trees for Tanunda

The next phase of The Barossa Council’s rolling tree replacement program will see almost 50 street trees replaced in Tanunda’s main street.

Mayor Bim Lange said the staged program is entering its third year and has been highly successful in maintaining the amenity of local streetscapes.

“This has been a proactive move by Council to ensure trees that are in decline or may become a risk to public safety are identified and replaced,” he said.

“These particular street trees present unacceptable risk, have structural issues or no long-term future.

“Council is taking a coordinated approach to remove them all at once and replace them in quick succession to ensure Tanunda’s main street retains its unique character and amenity.”

An independent tree audit recommended the removal of 48 carob and ash trees in 10 separate locations along the length of Murray Street, to be replaced with the same species.

The rolling tree removal and replacement program will commence late August, with some traffic management and parking restrictions in place.

“While we know some people in the community find tree removal regrettable, this project is future-proofing our tree stocks and the future sustainability of street trees across the region,” Mayor Lange said.
