Nominations are now open for the 2020 Senior Citizen of the Year Awards.

Held annually, the awards recognise persons aged 60 years and over, who have made a significant contribution in the past year to the local community.

Gympie Regional Council hosts the awards as part of Seniors Week, which runs from Saturday 15 to Sunday 23 August.

Last year’s female Senior Citizen of the Year, Lee Hodgson says it meant a lot to her to win the award and it was validation for all the hard work she does in the community.

“It was such an honour to be recognised but I think there are a lot of volunteers in the community that deserved to win as well.”

“I don’t volunteer to receive awards; the pleasure I get from seeing someone enjoying a visit or receiving something I have brought them is why I volunteer, “she said.

The Annual Seniors Morning Tea and Concert has been postponed to 2021 due to COVID-19.

The male and female winners will be announced on Thursday, 20 August on Council’s website and Facebook page.

The winners will also attend a small COVIDSafe morning tea with the Mayor on Friday, 21 August.

Nominations close 5pm Friday, 14 August.
