Work has commenced this week on transforming the Pambula Beach Surf Club precinct through functionality, accessibility and infrastructure improvements.
This project represents the next step forward in Bega Valley Shire Council’s vision to establish the south-east of NSW and our Shire more specifically, as a leader in accessible tourism.
In addition to Pambula Beach, Bruce Steer Pool at Bermagui and Merimbula’s Short Point are also part of the broader ‘Bega Valley Shire – A Destination for All’ program that stemmed from an extensive community consultation process and the development of master plans for these sites.
With the longest coastline of any Council in New South Wales, there is little doubt that the unique coastal environment is one of our greatest attractions for locals and visitors alike. Dynamic, varied and largely pristine, our waterways and beaches define for many the sense of place.
The rugged nature of our coastline in many ways provides its identity, but unfortunately it is also the characteristic that severely restricts and, in many cases, completely prevents the large proportion of the community with mobility limitations from enjoying the activities many take for granted.
Council’s Leisure and Recreation Manager, John Grady, said that the Pambula Beach project has been devised to add functionality and key pieces of infrastructure to improve accessibility and make the most of the relatively flat site.
“It great to see works getting underway. The project will make the most of the site to see improved accessibility and recreation use for both locals and visitors. Works include improvements and additions to paths, accessible parking, a new playspace and outdoor gym, new amenities and picnic and barbecue areas,” Mr Grady said.
Local contractors Guideline South Coast have commenced the civil work, while the contracts for the playspace, outdoor gym and amenities block are all set to awarded soon. The project is set to completed in time for the summer holidays.
The ‘Bega Valley Shire – A Destination for All’ program is being made possible thanks to $2.3 million in funding from the NSW Government’s Regional Growth – Environment and Tourism Fund and Council contributions.
