In Victoria, general council elections are held every four years. The Victorian Electoral Commission manages the elections.
Local council elections will held be held in October 2020 by post. Voters in each council will receive a ballot pack in early October.
VotingVoting in council elections is compulsory. You must be correctly enrolled before 4pm on Friday 28 August. To enrol to vote or to update your enrolment details visit the Victorian Electoral Commission website.
Stand for CouncilIf you want to stand as a candidate, you can nominate from 17 September.
Note that eligibility requirements for candidates have recently changed. This year, for the first time, local government candidates are required to complete mandatory training to be eligible to nominate.
Candidate information sessionThe Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) will run an online community and candidate information session for Benalla Rural City on Thursday 3 September via Zoom.
