Hackathon challenges participants to think big about enhancing Sydney's third CBD

Liverpool City Council is calling on people to think about ways open data could enhance Liverpool as a vibrant, safe and economically prosperous city centre.
The challenge is one of many being put to participants across Australia and New Zealand as part of GovHack, the largest annual open data hack-event in the southern hemisphere, to be held virtually from 14 to 16 August.
“Liverpool City Council is delighted to once again participate in GovHack, encouraging bright minds across the country to think strategically about ways of overcoming challenges using open data,” Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said.
“We are proud to play a role in enhancing our international standing as a city of innovation through collaboration on initiatives such as GovHack.”
Mayor Waller said many Council-led initiatives demonstrated the power of innovation and collaboration to improve services and liveability for residents and workers in Liverpool, which has emerged as Sydney’s third CBD.
“We are working closely with our Liverpool Innovation Precinct partners to develop an innovation ecosystem where research, development and collaboration between businesses, universities, health and research institutions is fostered and thriving,” Mayor Waller said.
“In July Liverpool was recognised on the world stage after accepting an invitation to join a global network alongside a select group of 20 global innovation precincts through the Global Institute on Innovation Districts.
“Innovative Council initiatives include a project to track the movements of people in the Liverpool CBD to better inform planning decisions and our Fifteenth Avenue Smart Transit (FAST) Corridor vision for a rapid transit corridor which could be future-proofed for new technologies such as driverless electric buses and trackless trams.”
GovHack participants who choose to select Liverpool City Council’s proposed challenge will be provided with resources such as the Liverpool City Centre Public Domain Master Plan and an overview of economic development measures unveiled to support businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The GovHack Competition is a two-day hack event held simultaneously across Australia and New Zealand. Participants create concepts, mashups and models with open government data to examine the challenges facing government and communities in new and innovative ways. GovHack 2020 will run from 14-16 August.
