Move over Venice Beach and Bondi, Manly’s got a new outdoor gym and our muscle men and women will rival the best!
Our new facility, on East Esplanade between the amenities block and the sailing club, caters not only for gym junkies but is inclusive, intergenerational, and perfect for people of all levels of fitness - even those who are less mobile.
Users can sit and enjoy the charm of the area with this new community space which includes the gym equipment, a swing set, and accessible park furniture.
For the exercise enthusiast, the upper body station and sit up/step-up bench means you can work both upper and lower body, and you don’t have to let a little drizzle stop you from sweating either - the surrounding rubber safety surface provides all all-weather access and is perfect for floor exercises and stretching.
Special landscaping features include sandstone paving and edging to the gardens, a restored and relocated column monument, and new turf.
Interestingly, all the curved sandstone blocks for the memorial plinth had to be individually cut and shaped by hand. The circular design relates back to the original base when the monument was located near the wharf over a hundred years ago. This is the third time it has been relocated over the last 100 years to accommodate changes around the wharf.
This new space forms part of Council’s East Esplanade Landscape Plan, with Council’s in-house landscape architects and construction team designing and managing the project.
We are currently completing the public amenities block which is the next stage of works. This Stage will also include an improved driveway entrance, accessible pathway to the amenities, sandstone edging, and sitting wall, paving works, more new turfing, and signage upgrades.
