Six local heritage projects receive $19,000 in funding

Six local heritage projects have received $19,000 in funding under Council’s 2020/21 Local Heritage Grant Program.

Each year, Council, with the assistance from Heritage NSW, facilitates an annual Local Heritage Grant Program. The grants aim to contribute to the preservation of structures of historical value and to foster positive attitudes towards heritage and conservation.

This year’s recipients include:

The Binalong Court House - $4,000 The Binalong Mechanics Institute - $2,900 The Royal Hotel Binalong - $3,200 St Patricks Church Binalong - $3,500. Uniting Church Yass - $4,000 Sutton Public School - $1,400

Binalong Progress Association President, Libby Elliot said the funding received by the Binalong Court House will be put to good use removing the front entry flooring and joist damage and restoring the main Court House room to its former glory.

The Binalong Court House is located on Queen Street, Binalong and was built in 1883 at a cost of 1,700 pounds. Court in Binalong was abolished on 6 December 1974 and the original building is still standing proudly as part of the historic landscape in the village.

“We are very grateful for the funding,” said Mrs Elliot. “Our first project is the front entry flooring and joist damage and to restore the main room of the Court House, and we hope to eventually turn the Court House into a living museum with an educational focus.”

Yass Valley Mayor, Rowena Abbey, thanked all applicants for the 2020/2021 Local Heritage Grant Program for taking the time to make their detailed submissions.

“The Program is a way for Council to provide financial assistance to enable maintenance projects to structures of significant historical value to ensure their conservation for future generations,” Cr Abbey said.

“Council’s financial support is needed now more than ever as COVID-19 has presented many challenges and prevented many local groups from fundraising in their traditional methods.”
