The Shire of Collie has this week kicked off an exciting new project that will reinvigorate Throssell Street with a large scale/ambitious streetscape renewal project between Steere Street South and Prinsep Street.
This project has been inspired by the Shire’s renewal of the 117-115 Throssell Street facades. The renewal of these building has demonstrated what is possible and has attracted over $1M of grant funding from the State government to expand this project and provide a welcoming and impressive entrance to our town.
This funding, which combined with contributions made by land owners, will be the most significant investment in the development of Throssell Street since its heyday in the early 1900s.
The purpose of the project is to:
Re-activate Throssell Street by upgrading building facades and reconstructing verandahs; Improve the aesthetic presentation of the street and buildings, particularly at the entry to town; Create business opportunities and encourage further private investment in Throssell Street; and Improve amenity for the public.The Shire of Collie CEO, David Blurton said that ‘This project will support the construction industry in short term while creating long term economic opportunities for Collie through the attraction of businesses to the upgraded shopfronts. The renewal of Throssell Street will help achieve the community’s vision of a connected, committed and creative community’.
A Whole of Street approach will be taken, with heritage architects, H+H Architects engaged by the Shire to design and project manage the upgrade of this historic streetscape, interpreting the original scale and character of Throssell Street and creating a legacy for future generations to enjoy.
The State member for Collie-Preston the Hon. Mick Murray MLA said that ‘the State government’s investment in the upgrade of Throssell Street will welcome visitors and support jobs. This project complements the substantial investment that the State has made in Collie including new trail construction, Wellington Dam Mural, Collie Scenic Drive upgrades and the recreation works at Lake Kepwari’.
The Throssell Streetscape Renewal project is intended to bring together the local business community by reinvesting back into Collie’s central commercial district, whilst the delivery of the project will prioritise obtaining quotes by local builders and trades, offering a welcome economic boost for Collie.
This project is due for completion over the summer months.
