Police station announcement welcomed

The City of Fremantle has welcomed today’s announcement that the state government will build a new police station in Fremantle.

Police Minister Michelle Roberts announced this morning the government would spend $52.6 million towards the construction of a state-of-the-art new police complex on the Stan Reilly site on South Terrace.

The site next to the Fremantle Hospital and Fremantle Oval is currently used as the Cappuccino Strip car park.

Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said the state government’s investment in Fremantle was very welcome.

“The City of Fremantle has been calling for a greater police presence in Fremantle for a long time, so today’s announcement is excellent news,” Mayor Pettitt said.

“Hopefully having a brand new, fit-for-purpose police station in Fremantle will mean we will see more police officers stationed here, which will be great for the community and for local businesses.

“The choice of the Stan Reilly site does create some challenges for the City’s vision to redevelop Fremantle Oval and create a vibrant and active streetscape along South Terrace.

“We look forward to working with the government and the police to ensure we get the best possible outcome in relation to the design of the new police station in a manner that still enables the redevelopment of the Fremantle oval and hospital precincts and appropriate public access connections through the site.”

Today’s announcement also included a further $4.2 million to construct a new wharf and jetty for the Water Police in North Fremantle.

The redevelopment of Fremantle Oval and the land surrounding it is one of five key strategic projects highlighted in the City of Fremantle’s Freo2029 Transformational Moves strategy.

As part of the vision for the project Fremantle Oval will become an enhanced sporting centre, including being the home of WAFL football clubs and a WAFL centre of excellence, as well as catering for cricket matches, AFLW games and cultural events.

Surplus land around the oval precinct offers the potential for a range of community, residential and commercial uses as well as better public connections through the area.
