Wyndham City and The Gordon TAFE are helping to engage Wyndham residents with jobs in the agricultural industry with a free online Industry Insights event.

Future Focused Economy portfolio holder Cr Walter Villagonzalo said that Industry Insights sessions would run on the last Tuesday of each month of 2020, in order to showcase local industries, their hiring practices, and offer insights into how they operate.

“The next session on August 25 will host recruiters from the agricultural sector to share their insights on careers in that industry, tips on applying for their roles, and what they looking for in potential staff members,” Cr Villagonzalo said.

“Staff from Fresh Select and Wyndham People Solutions will share insights into what state of the art techniques and farming processes are used right here in Werribee South so jobseekers – or those seeking to change career – can see if a career in farming services may be suitable.”

Fresh Select chief executive, John Said, said he employed 85 staff and demand for more workers was growing every week.

“Farming is a dynamic and fast-moving industry and each day is different. The industry is always in demand. If you make a career in agriculture, you will have a job for life,” Mr Said said.

Mr Said said there was steady career progression for Fresh Select staff with many coming in at ground level as a farm hand or a packer, then progressing to a team leader or forklift driver.”

“We’ve had warehouse storepersons promoted to transport and logistics and sales roles. We have also had a staff member who started as a farm hand and is now one of our senior sales coordinators.”

“We have a good mix of male and female employees across all areas of the business.”

“We would like to see more young people join the industry who share in the passion and enthusiasm for a career in agriculture. It’s rare to see school leavers knock on our door who are genuinely looking for a start in this industry.”

Industry Insights into Agriculture and Farm Services will be held Tuesday 25th August from 10am-11:30am FREE online via Zoom Virtual Session
