Organisers considering hosting event between 2022 and 2024, which would require the closure of the Great Ocean Road, and deliver significant economic, social and environmental benefits, should lodge an Expression of Interest now.
The Great Ocean Road is one of Australia's most recognised touring routes, with some two million people travelling along the iconic stretch each year to experience the unique journey and unforgettable views.
Colac Otway Shire and Surf Coast Shire recognise the popularity of the road and that events are crucial for communities, providing a range of economic, social and environmental benefits for both residents and visitors.
Colac Otway Development and Community Services Manager Ian Seuren said Great Ocean Road Event Closure Guidelines had been developed by Regional Roads Victoria, Victoria Police, Surf Coast Shire and Colac Otway Shire, after extensive community consultation.
“The guidelines enable the staging of events of state, national or international significance which benefit our communities,” Mr Seuren said.
“The guidelines require event organisers to deliver the host region economic, social and environmental benefits that can be quantified and allow a maximum of two road closures between 1 May and 31 October each year.
“The evaluation panel will consider providing in-principle support for up to three years for events which are successful in the EoI process, with annual reviews,” he said.
“Expressions of Interest will close Friday 9 October 2020 at 4pm and a steering committee including Regional Roads Victoria, Victoria Police, Surf Coast Shire and Colac Otway Shire representatives will assess applications and advise successful applicants with a final decision on 30 October, 2020.”
