Story book author Janette Quince, Trevor, and book illustrator Jo Cuskelly.
Western Downs’ beloved four-legged friend Trevor the Story Dog has been written into history, with Western Downs Libraries launching a special storybook in his honour.
The children’s book, Trevor the Library Dog celebrates the beloved local identity, who is an Accredited Story Dog and has the important role of supporting children to improve their reading in a safe and comfortable environment.
Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said the storybook was a clever way to explain Trevor’s role in the community.
“Trevor the dachshund is a local celebrity who has the extremely important job of supporting children in their reading abilities, boosting confidence, and making them feel more comfortable reading aloud,” Cr Maguire said.
“Accredited Story Dogs are utilised right across Australia to boost literary skills and are specifically trained to be gentle around strangers, ignore various distractions and keep focused on the reader.
“Trevor has been with Western Downs Libraries for two years now and is making a huge contribution to young families across the region, and it’s great to see him celebrated in his very own book.“
Trevor the Library Dog is written by librarian and Trevor’s owner Janette Quince and is illustrated by renowned local artist Jo Cuskelly.
To make the launch extra special, the illustrations are being exhibited at the Dalby Library until the end of school holidays on 6 October.
Mrs Cuskelly said it was an honour to bring Trevor’s story to life and create vibrant illustrations for the community to enjoy.
“It’s fantastic to be a part of this initiative to celebrate this great little companion and the joy of reading,” Mrs Cuskelly said.
“Reading is such an important skill and it is great to see Western Downs Libraries thinking outside the box and raising awareness of Council’s community services by developing this book.”
Trevor the Library Dog the story book and Jo Cuskelly’s illustrations are available for borrowing and sale at Western Downs Libraries.
