Bright reminder to shine light on domestic and family violence

A park bench at Mudgeeraba’s Rotary Park has been painted red as part of a national initiative to raise awareness for domestic and family violence.

The Red Bench Project was created by the Red Rose Foundation in 2019 and aims to bring domestic and family violence to light by creating visible and permanent reminders of the issue in public settings across the country.

Mayor Tom Tate said the project encouraged local communities to take a stand on domestic and family violence.

“This bench signifies the City’s support for projects which shine a light on important issues such as domestic and family violence,” said Mayor Tate.

“The idea of having the bright red bench in a public park is to stop people in their tracks – and inspire a conversation about this important issue.

“It’s great to see this movement gaining momentum across Australia, with local governments and community organisations coming together to establish 120 red benches across the country.

“By starting a conversation as a community, we can help change the ending to domestic and family violence.”

LNP Shadow Health Minister Ros Bates said she was pleased to see the City of Gold Coast supporting the important work of the Red Rose Foundation. 

“As a survivor of domestic violence, I’m proud to represent the LNP for this important cause in my electorate of Mudgeeraba,” said Ms Bates.

“More needs to be done to stamp out this abhorrent behaviour and support victims and their families.

“The LNP is committed to deliver a comprehensive Domestic Violence plan to protect victims, punish offenders and keep Queensland communities safe.”

The Red Rose Foundation is a national not for profit charity who works to end domestic violence across Australian communities.
