An upcoming school holiday workshop will provide local children with an opportunity to explore, create and share in an “Underwater World” adventure without leaving the Macedon Ranges. KTH Kids is going online for a creative mural workshop with a deep-sea connection.
“Underwater World” is an opportunity for children to be creative during the September school holidays while COVID restrictions are in place. Working alongside a local artist and using recycled sticker materials, children will create a mural that explores the colourful oceanic underwater world of corals, sponges and sea creatures. The workshop has an underlying educational message about the marine environment and plastic pollution in our waterways.
Participants can also submit a photo of their creation via our website to be part of a Deep Sea Mural.
Artwork received will be enlarged and mounted on recycled corflute events boards and displayed outside Kyneton Town Hall. The community mural will enable children to be able to part of a collective body of work that raises awareness of the fragility of the underwater ecology.
Workshop facilitator and Macedon Ranges local, Joanne (Jo) Mott is a practicing artist with over 25 years’ community art project experience. Jo places an emphasis on collaborative practice and environmental themes in her work.
Register onlineParticipants need to register in advance, pay a $5 workshop fee and an art materials pack will be sent in the post. The pack includes a deep-sea mural background, stencils and sticker materials - everything the child will need to make their artwork. Children can join the online workshop any time during the upcoming September/October school holiday period through short instructional videos which engage children aged four to 14 years.
Director Planning and Environment Angela Hughes said the creative arts project would help parents to support their children at home during the COVID pandemic and provide links to other children in the community while they are at home.
“This fun school holiday project is part of Council’s #InThisTogether initiative, keeping us connected and creative during the pandemic. Being creative is a great way for children to express themselves.”
