Burnie eSports kicks off for Burnie Shines 2020

Published on 01 September 2020

Burnie eSports will make its debut this October for the 20th Anniversary of the Burnie Shines Festival. eSports are essentially gaming tournaments which will be held every Friday evening during Burnie Shines starting at 6pm, culminating with a grand finale on Friday 30 October for all the winners, with $1000 worth of prizes up for grabs!

First off the ranks is a ‘Destiny 2’ 1v1 Tournament, with entries open for PC, Xbox and PS4 gamers.

Burnie eSports plans to start the process of building an eSports league in the region, and hopes to include some ‘public’ tournaments in the future as momentum builds. The eSports team hope to hold the tournament finals at a Burnie venue with a live audience.

Burnie eSport Committee member Dylan Elphinstone said "We have decided to initially concentrate on getting a Destiny 2 Tournament right as that’s where our initial skills lie, but we are trying to attract others into helping getting up other games. We want to do this properly, and that takes people that are keen to make something happen."

“eSports is something that everyone in the region can get involved in, you don’t need to be a professional to play. Of course, if you want to become a professional we hope as we develop to build pathways that allow you to do that.”

Players must be 13 years of age to join the tournament and to access the North West Tassie Discord server where the tournaments are managed with the help of a ‘Tourney Bot’.

As well as the Destiny 2 Tournament, players on the North West Tassie Discord server can create their own ‘Scrims’ with the bot. Players can hold best of matches for any game, on any platform and decide for themselves how many players will be involved, who gets to play, and what they are playing for. Scrims are perfect for teams who want to practice, players who want to build skill, or individuals who wish to settle it 1v1.

You can also message an admin to find out how to join the Burnie eSport Committee and to assist with building a local league.

Registrations for the first week’s tournament close at 7:30am on the day of the event - Friday 2 October.

Winners from each week will be entered into a main event on Friday 30 October and be in the running for some super prizes!
