Burnie Youth Art Challenge 2020

The Burnie Youth Art Challenge is an event that showcases 2D, 3D and photographic works by young people, from kinder through to 25 years, in the Burnie region. This year there is over $1,200 worth of prizes to be won. 

The Burnie Youth Art Challenge will run from 29 October to 6 November as part of the Burnie Shines Festival, with artworks on public display from 3pm to 5pm weekdays at the Burnie Coastal Art Group, Studio2 Eleven, 211 Mount Street, and Upper Burnie. 

Burnie City Council Mayor Steve Kons said he was “looking forward to seeing the response from the community to being able to submit and view their artwork online, in addition to the traditional Gallery Exhibition this year.  

“Last year entries into the challenge filled the studio, with families attending the exhibition during the week from 3-5pm every day, and the final Friday night seeing a capacity crowd for the awards ceremony. If everything goes to plan, that will be happening again this year, but with many events being cancelled due to the uncertainty surrounding Covid-19, we have taken extra steps to ensure that the event will run no matter what, and have built a website that will be able to host the exhibition in case the Gallery needs to close due to Covid-19.” 

One of the highlights of the award night is The ‘Rising Star Art Award’, instigated by retired teachers Sandra Henderson and Bob Lubout. The senior award for students in years 8, 9 and 10 is a certificate and gift voucher to the value of $100, the junior award a certificate and $50 gift voucher, awarded to young artists who produces a piece of work which shows outstanding creativity and technical skills.  

The Art Challenge will have an extra age category this year with a Young Adults under 25 Open category being added.

The winners will be announced Friday 6 November from 3.30pm to 4.30pm at Studio 2 Eleven in Upper Burnie and will then be displayed at the Burnie Regional Art Gallery in November at a date to be announced.
