Workshop to rethink your organic waste

Eurobodalla Council will host an online workshop during National Organics Week for residents to explore options to reuse their organic waste.

Held on Thursday 10 September at 7.30pm, the workshop will discuss the pros and cons of hot and cold composting, worm farming, Bokashi bins and keeping chickens.

Council’s waste education officer Gillian Kearney said organic waste comprised a substantial proportion of people’s red-lid bin contents, taking up valuable space in landfill.

“Organic matter such as food waste can be reused in much more beneficial way for everyone and the environment,” she said.

“If allowed to break down naturally in a composting or fermentation process it provides a valuable soil conditioner.

“Almost all your food waste can be repurposed into nitrogen-rich fertiliser for your garden.

“By recycling effectively and correctly and keeping organics and other valuable resources out of landfill, we can all help save on landfill space as well as look after our beautiful surroundings.”

This 45-minute workshop presentation on Zoom will explore options that suit just about every household or school community.

Ms Kearney said it would be a great pre-curser to learn more about Council’s free in-person composting and worm farming workshops, to be held in November.
