Mareeba PCYC Youth Support workers engaged with local youth to create a colourful mural on the Mareeba Cricket Club canteen building at Firth Park. The young people worked with local Muluridji artist Sandra Mathieson to design and paint the artwork, which has received lots of interest and positive comments from residents and the community.
The project received funding through the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) which is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Mareeba Shire Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
Chair of the RADF Committee, Mayor Angela Toppin congratulated all those involved in the project. “The activity provided positive arts participation activities and has helped to increase connection with and a sense of pride in their community,” she said.
The artwork depicts the Granite Creek surroundings with the blue, winding creek and kids’ footprints along the banks as they walk between the creek and homes. The cricket bats show the location of the Cricket Club at Firth Park. The leaves and trees of the bushland surrounding the parks are also shown, with background orange representing the afternoon sunset.
