Electric vehicle drivers will now be able to stop off in Yass to plug-in and recharge thanks to a new fast charger rolled out to kick-start the Hume Highway charging network and encourage regional travel.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said Yass was the first town to receive an EV charging station in a $3 million co-funded partnership between the NSW Government and the NRMA, with 19 more on track to roll out over the coming years.
“These charging stations will change the way EV drivers move around, helping to support tourism in regional centres along the Hume, Newell, Barrier, New England, and Kamilaroi highways,” Mr Toole said.
“We want people to stop off and explore regional towns like Yass while they charge their EVs.”
General Manger of NRMA Motoring Operations Dan Maranhao with Yass Valley Mayor Rowena Abbey and Goulburn MP Wendy Tuckerman.
Member for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman said the new charger unveiled today in Yass built upon the NSW Government’s vision to boost tourism in the regions.
“I’m excited that this charger builds upon the existing chargers already in place, which will deliver the most comprehensive regional charging network in the country,” Mrs Tuckerman said.
“As more people than ever are travelling regionally, we are delighted to be able to provide road users with the infrastructure needed to drive these cleaner vehicles throughout the state.”
Yass Valley Mayor Rowena Abbey said the EV charging station is a real coup for Yass.
"It's a great choice of location as it's close to our beautiful Banjo Paterson Park and our great local cafes, restaurants and retail businesses. It will give EV drivers the opportunity to explore what we have on offer in Yass."
NRMA General Manager Ops and Motoring Dan Maranhao said the additions to the NRMA’s existing charging network is a great step in encouraging more drivers to start using electric vehicles.
“The installation of the Yass electric vehicle charger is a major connection along the Hume Highway and is part of our vision to work with the NSW Government to boost regional travel as well as minimise the anxiety that might come with purchasing an electric vehicle,” Mr Maranhao said.
“We believe that with a comprehensive regional fast charging network we will see this type of vehicle become an increasingly popular choice."
An electric vehicle charger in Wagga Wagga is on track to be delivered by the end of this month, with the remaining stations to be delivered over the next two years.
