Wanneroo Council has endorsed plans for a cycling track at Yanchep’s Splendid Park, after receiving widespread support for the facility during a community consultation period earlier this year.

A report presented to Council last month stated that 97.1 per cent of responses received during the four-week community consultation period were in favour of a purpose-built cycling track winding its way around the perimeter of Splendid Park.

The City sought feedback from a range of stakeholders, including local residents, cycling groups and sports clubs.

Comments supplied via the City’s online Your Say hub cited the positive impact a facility of this kind would have on the development of cyclists and athletes, calling it a “great initiative for the Perth community, not just Splendid Park.”

Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said the endorsed design offered multiple course configurations, and would be able to support training and competition, as well as a variety of other family-friendly recreational pursuits, such as skating and running.

“The City of Wanneroo has worked in collaboration with the Northern Beaches Cycling Club and other key stakeholders in developing this exciting draft master plan,” she said.

“Detailed design will now be undertaken this financial year, with procurement and construction scheduled for 2021/22.”

Northern Beaches Cycling Club President Chris Howard said the cycle track was vital to the club “supporting rider education, training and racing, particularly for local youth”. “Local schools have already expressed interest in using the track for physical education and health and wellbeing programs,” Mr Howard said.

“The City of Wanneroo are to be congratulated for its vision in providing the Yanchep and Two Rocks region with a facility to help more people get fit and healthy.”
