This Week at Council - Monday, 14 September Community Announcements/Latest News

Routine Spring weed spraying During the Spring months, Council crews will be out and about undertaking routine spraying of weeds on road verges, and in our open spaces, including parks, sports fields and gardens. Signs will be posted in open spaces, where possible, to notify residents that the spraying has taken place. Any questions or concerns, please contact Council on 6226 1477.  Please note: this is in addition to, and separate from, Council's road reserve priority weed spraying program, which will also be undertaken in the coming months and further information will be provided at the time. Yass Valley Council, together with Roadworx, will commence upgrade works on Yass Valley Way from today (Monday, 14 September 2020). The first portion of works is to remove overhanging trees from the work area. This will take approximately one to two weeks (weather permitting) to complete and delays to residents should be minimal. The next portion of works will be rehabilitation of the roadway and final sealing. This work will take approximately six to seven weeks (weather permitting) to complete. As the work progresses along Yass Valley Way, there will be some impacts on residents as the roadway will be unsuitable for traffic at certain times. Of course, all attempts to keep disruptions and delays to a minimum will be taken, while safety and access for all road users will be top priority. To ensure the safety of road users, signage and safety cones and bollards will be installed along the work site to ensure visibility at night. We thank you for your patience during this time. If you have any questions regarding the works, please contact the Roadworx office on (02) 4224 0222 or Yass Valley Council Customer Service on (02) 6226 1477.

Get Ready Weekend Yass Valley Council is encouraging families, friends and neighbours to use the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) Get Ready Weekend (19-20 September 2020) to prepare for bushfire season and start a broader conversation about being aware of and prepared for all hazards. “The 2019/20 bushfire season was the most devastating bushfire season in our State’s history. It was a stark reminder of the danger of fire. It was also a reminder of the importance of being prepared and having a plan,” Yass Valley Mayor, Rowena Abbey said. “In the lead up to our next fire season - with the previous one in the not so distant past and the impacts still being felt across NSW - communities are understandably keen to know more about getting ready.” To support early planning and preparation, NSW RFS will once again host their annual Get Ready Weekend on 19-20 September, in person and online. Please follow your local RFS brigade’s Facebook page for information as it becomes available. You can also visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au for more information.

Submissions welcome for Civic Precinct: In February 2020, Council endorsed a wish list of projects and resolved to undertake planning and design work so the projects would be ‘shovel ready’ in the event of grant funding opportunities. One of these projects is a Civic Precinct, which would include a new library, community rooms and exhibition spaces, long term Government tenants and the retention of Crago's Mill among other elements. Council is keen to understand if the elements for inclusion in the Civic Precinct meet community needs and expectations.
