Join bird counting exercise

The Cairns community is being invited to again join a citizen science exercise that provides a snapshot of birds in the region.

Council will for the fourth consecutive year sponsor the Aussie Backyard Bird Count program, which has been running in various parts of Australia for seven years.

Conducted in October, the count allows the Australia’s national bird conservation charity (Birdlife Australia) to examine trends in bird communities over time.

The data also forms part of Council’s annual sustainability report card and helps to inform Green Space Our Place and other planting projects.

* This resolution from today’s Community, Sport, Events and Cultural Services Committee meeting needs to be ratified at the next Ordinary Meeting of Council, to be held on 23 September 2020.
