Encouraging young people to get involved in arts and culture is a focus of a new strategy outlined today at a Council Committee meeting.
Council’s Strategy for Young Creatives aims to increase youth engagement in programs that encourage further participation, education and employment in the cultural and creative industries.
The strategy was developed in partnership with Arts Queensland and funded through the 2018-19 Regional Arts Development Fund.
Consultation was carried out from February to September 2019 and identified challenges and opportunities that impact on young people’s engagement and participation in the arts, culture and creative enterprise.
Among the challenges acknowledged was the unavailability of positions and career opportunities in the local sector, not enough post-school direction and training, and high costs and limited funding.
It is anticipated that the Strategy for Young Creatives will address many of the challenges outlined in the report and build on identified opportunities.
* This resolution from today’s Community, Sport, Events and Cultural Services Committee meeting needs to be ratified at the next Ordinary Meeting of Council, to be held on 23 September 2020.
